Hing, also known as Asafoetida, is a staple in Indian kitchens and Ayurvedic practices. Despite its pungent aroma, this ancient spice holds a revered place in both culinary and medicinal traditions. Yet, many still have questions about its origin, uses, benefits, and how to identify quality hing.

  1. How Hing (Asafoetida) is made?

Hing is a pungent spice derived from the resin of the roots of Ferula plants, native to Iran and Afghanistan. Farmers cut the roots and collect the milky resin of the plant. This dried resin is the raw form of “raw hing” — it is hard, brownish-red, and very strong. It mixed with edible gum for to be used in cooking as “compounded hing”

  2. What are the benefits of hing? why hing is used in indian kitchens?

In Ayurveda, Hing is known to ground and calm the Vata dosha, which governs movement and air in the body. Scientifically, Hing is a natural carminative and contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds that support immune function, Stimulates stomach enzymes and helps regulate acid balance. It acts as a natural expectorant by loosening mucus. It helps reduce menstrual cramps and hormonal imbalance due to its antispasmodic properties.

  1. Can hing be used in pregnancy? How Hing can be used for babies?

For Pregnancy: A pinch of hing in food, especially cooked in ghee, is generally safe in the second and third trimesters. It helps with gas and bloating during pregnancy.

For Infants and Babies: Hing is commonly used as a home remedy for colic or gas in infants but only for external use. Since babies’ digestive systems are too delicate for hing consumption, Hing cannot be given for internal use for infants. In case of toddlers (babies more than 1 year), a small pinch of pure hing (without filters) can be added in their khichdi, It help them to reduce gas, improves digestion, and prevents bloating.
